Thanks RC!

Your suggestion just helped me. I was fully stymied. LOL

It was an IQ test and I was failing until I read your post/solution.

Thanks!

Hi, C.

Wow! I had certainly forgotten THAT post that I made in 2010! But I'm
glad that you found it still useful.

You are very welcome, of course.

It's definitely specific to Chrome. Somehow the highlight gets turned on which toggles an overwrite when clicking the mouse in the middle of text when editing. Clicking the insert key does not turn it off. Only happens in Chrome. Never in Firefox or Opera browser. With each update Chrome gets worse and worse. I first noticed this problem in Yahoo email.

My "insert" key also didn't work. So I turned off my "number lock" on the number keypad and used the 0 as the "insert" button - "b/c it says "ins" onthe 0 key - and used that to toggle. That worked and turned off the insert/overtype function on my gmail.

I've just discovered this issue, just recently upgraded to chrome beta 46.0, issue not on all chrome use, happening right now in gmail hangouts, whileat same time i'm typing in chrome here with no issue of overwrite. Tried several ways to turn off overwrite mode in hangouts, none worked. going to restart chrome to see if that does it.

This happens to me all the time. Use Shift+Caps Lock+Insert and then press caps lock again to turn off the caps.

it's a STUPID setting!

This just happened to me in Google Sheets, and my keyboard has an Insert key, but it was not working... when typing in the "formula bar," Insert did nothing, and I was stuck in replace (overtype) mode. The trick was to double-click a CELL to put the cursor there. THEN the Insert key toggled insert/replace as expected, and the change to normal insert mode carried over to the formula bar.

Super confusing!

Wow, that is super confusing. But, your post helped a lot. I've been Googling for the last 10 minutes trying to figure out what he hell was going on.

Thanks!

Thanks a ton, I've been using a Mac so long with the wireless keyboard, this didn't even cross my mind - I tried both the USB and laptop's keyboard insert key to no success, but the numpad's insert worked... wot Chrome?

Works perfectly. Not sure why Google put it as a hidden gem. Finally super annoyance got solved. Thanks a ton.
